Words to Numbers — How to Convert Number Words Back to Digits

Updated 2026-09-28 · 11 min read

Quick answer

Paste English number words like "two lakh fifty thousand" into the tool's Words → Number mode to get 250000 instantly. It handles hyphens ("twenty-five"), the word "and", and scales up to trillions.

How reverse conversion works

  1. The text is split into tokens: "two", "lakh", "fifty", "thousand".
  2. Small numbers (one–nineteen, twenty–ninety) accumulate into a running group.
  3. "Hundred" multiplies the group by 100.
  4. Scale words (thousand, lakh, crore, million…) multiply the group and add it to the total.
  5. "And" is skipped — it carries no value.

Examples

WordsNumber
twenty-five25
one hundred and five105
two lakh fifty thousand250000
three crore30000000
one million two hundred thousand1200000

What it cannot do (yet)

  • Urdu/Hindi script input — reverse mode currently supports English words only.
  • Currency words ("rupees", "dollars") are ignored, not converted.
  • Fractions like "point five" are not supported — use the Number mode for decimals.
  • Typos ("fourty", "ninty") will fail — spell carefully.

Practical uses

  • Digitizing old typed documents and deeds.
  • Checking dictated amounts ("did they mean 15 or 50?").
  • Cleaning invoice data pasted from PDFs.
